Gangtok is the capital of the Indian state of Sikkim. It is also the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. Gangtok is located in the eastern Himalayan range, at an elevation of 1,650 metres (5,410 ft). The town’s development began in the early 19th century when the first monastery was built. Gangtok rapidly developed as a stopover point for traders travelling between Tibet and India. By the mid-19th century, it had become a small town.
There are many different parts of Gangtok that tourists can explore. The Rumtek Monastery, the Do-Drul Chorten, and the Enchey Monastery are some of the most popular tourist destinations. Gangtok is also home to the Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology, which is a world-renowned centre for the study of Tibetan culture and history.
The best time to visit Gangtok is between October and December when the weather is cool and pleasant.
